Greensboro, N.C. – Eleven student-athletes,
representing eight institutions, were selected to the fourth annual
North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) College
Division All-State team
released Monday.
 Robert Fricke, Greensboro,
North Carolina Wesleyan
College (17-2-2 this year) placed three
students on the team, which is comprised
of nominees from NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA schools. Lenoir-Rhyne College had two
all-state picks from its 19-1-1 unit.
The team
consists of students from NCAA Division II and Division III colleges and
universities throughout
the state. North Carolina
sports information professionals submitted nominees and NCCSIA members
selected the teams. The all-state unit consists of one goalkeeper, three
defenders, four midfielders
and three forwards. All students involved with ties in the voting process are
included on the all-state
squad.
Founded in
2002, NCCSIA is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division
I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The
organization seeks to
promote collegiate athletics and student-athletes at all schools. Membership is
open to anyone affiliated
with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility
lies within sports information. NCSSIA
selects all-state teams for men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men’s and
women’s basketball,
softball and baseball on the College (Division II, III, NAIA) and University
(Division I) levels.
More than
400 student-athletes have been recognized on all-state teams since 2003. NCCSIA’s
college division all-state women’s soccer team was also released Monday. The organization’s
university division all-state squads will be released Tuesday (12/12).

Team selection
North
Carolina Wesleyan’s Renato Corte is
the all-state goalkeeper. The team’s lone freshman, he
recorded 11 shutouts and compiled a 0.60 goals against average. The Battling
Bishops were ranked as high as
eighth nationally and reached the NCAA Division III quarterfinals.
Defender Steven Tupy and striker Lucas Fuentes--both First Team All-USA
South Athletic Conference
picks, also represented North Carolina Wesleyan. Tupy helped anchor a Bishops’
defense that
allowed only 10 goals all season. Fuentes recorded 14 goals, passed 11 assists
and scored four game-winning
goals.
Senior Ged Quinn and sophomore Gary Higgins helped Lenoir-Rhyne to a
program-best 19 wins. A
defender, Quinn was 2006 South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Co-Most Valuable
Player and scored
three game-winning goals from the back. Higgins, a midfielder, had nine goals,
posted a NCCSIA All-State
team-high 19 assists and helped the Bears to the SAC title.
Forward Luis Arrieta was the highest scoring
nominee on the 2006 ballot. The Belmont
Abbey junior
tallied 20 goals and dished four assists for 44 points for the 13-5-2
Crusaders. He became Belmont-Abbey’s
first Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) Player of the Year this
fall.
Lees-McRae’s Berin Boracic made the team as a forward after scoring 34 points
(15 goals, 4 assists)
for the Bobcats. He joined Arrieta on the First Team All-CVAC side.
Wingate’s Kerrin Sheldon made the team as a
defender. He netted seven goals and was named to the 2006
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® men’s soccer second team and the First
Team All-South Atlantic Conference unit.
Junior Robert Fricke of Greensboro earned an all-state midfield slot.
A member of the Pride’s USA South champion and NCAA Tournament
team, he scored nine goals and two assists.
Cihan Nuhoglu of Pfeiffer and Catawba’s Nathan Zuzga round out the 2006 team.
The two senior
midfielders also made the college division all-state squad in 2005. Nuhoglu
tallied 26 points (9 goals, 8
assists) for the Falcons and earned First Team All-CVAC honors. Zuzga was a
four-time All-SAC
selection (3-time first team) and helped Catawba to three straight NCAA
Division II regional appearances
from 2004-06.
