NCCSIA Announces 2010 North Carolina All-State College Division Softball Team Print E-mail
Thursday, June 17, 2010
Sample ImageGREENSBORO, N.C. – Twelve student-athletes, representing five different schools, comprise the 2010 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) College Division All-State Softball Team released Thursday.
The seventh-annual team consists of non-NCAA Division I student-athletes from North Carolina colleges and universities. North Carolina sports information professionals submitted the nominees, and NCCSIA members voted for the all-state teams, which consist of two starting pitchers, one catcher, four infielders, three outfielders, one designated player and for the first time, a utility player.
NCAA Division II Southeast Super Regional participant Lenoir-Rhyne University placed seven students on the team. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke had two all-state picks, while NCAA Division III playoff qualifier Greensboro College, Guilford College, and Wingate University each received one selection.
Founded in 2002, NCCSIA is comprised of sports information professionals from North Carolina’s NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions for the purpose of promoting college athletics in the state. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina whose responsibilities include sports information.
NCCSIA selects all-state teams in the university (NCAA Division I) and college (Division II, III, NAIA, NCCAA) divisions for women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and baseball. Over 600 student-athletes have been recognized on all-state teams since 2003.

Lenoir-Rhyne’s seven selections are the most in the all-state team’s seven-year history. The Bears went 53-9 in 2010 and were ranked ninth in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association NCAA Division II Poll. As in 2007, Lenoir-Rhyne had both all-state pitchers. Dawon Millwood (pictured) (21-4, 1.97 ERA) and Alex Smith (25-5, 2.05 ERA) combined for 46 53 wins and garnered all-region honors from both the NFCA and Daktronics. All-state catcher Sarah Atkins compiled a .355 batting average with 14 homers and 63 RBI in 62 starting assignments for the Bears. She was a Third Team Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American and the Most Valuable Player of the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Tournament. Shortstop Kat Rivers, one of two repeat selections to the all-state team, garnered First Team NFCA All-America recognition after batting .437 with an NCAA Division II-best and school-record 23 home runs. Second baseman Carlee Carpenter (.384, 13 HR, 44 RBI), outfielder Brittany Cherry (.355, 10 HR, 51 RBI) and designated player Ashley Duckworth (.301, 18 HR, 49 RBI) also represented Lenior-Rhyne on all-state and all-region teams.
First Team NFCA All-American third baseman Jelena Shaw headlines UNC Pembroke’s two all-state picks. The senior hit .437 with 11 homers, 15 doubles and 44 RBIs, which helped her to the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Award. Rookie teammate Holly Berry was a unanimous all-state selection as the team’s utility player after batting .423 with eight homers, 11 doubles and 47 RBI in 46 games. She was the Peach Belt Conference Rookie of the Year and a second-team all-region pick.
Guilford sophomore Kimberly Keys enjoyed the finest of her two college seasons with a .463 batting average, 63 hits and 46 RBI, all of which set or tied school records. The Second Team NFCA All-Region and First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference selection also had 19 multi-hit games and 12 multi-RBI games.
The second two-time all-state selection among this year’s honorees, Wingate senior LaRonda McClain earned First Team Daktronics All-Southeast honors after hitting a team-high .377 with 63 hits and 39 runs scored. The four-team All-SAC honoree helped the Bulldogs to a 35-15 overall record and concludes her career ranked second among the school’s career leaders in hits and stolen bases.
Greensboro sophomore Rebecca Pink led the Pride to the USA South Athletic Conference title and an NCAA Division III playoff bid. She hit .418 with 14 doubles and 27 RBI to earn First Team NFCA All-Southeast Region laurels. The 2010 USA South Player of the Year and USA South Tournament MVP helped the Pride to a 28-15-1 overall record that included a 17-game winning streak.
