2009 All-State Women’s College Division Soccer Team Announced Print E-mail
Monday, January 4, 2010

Sample ImageRaleigh, N.C. – Eleven student-athletes representing seven institutions were selected to the seventh annual North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) College Division All-State women’s soccer team.

Senior goal keeper Suzie Hinman (pictured left) from the Pfeiffer University was the only unanimous pick.  Alex Calvert of Meredith College was the only returning member to this year’s team earning her third spot on the top of the midfielder position.

The team consists of student-athletes from NCAA Division II and Division III colleges and universities throughout the state. North Carolina sports information professionals submitted nominees and NCCSIA members selected the teams.

The All-State unit consists of one goalkeeper, three defenders, four midfielders, and three forwards. All student-athletes involved with ties in the voting process were included on the All-State team.

The team is highlighted by two members each from four institutions, Pfeiffer University, Meredith College, Lenoir-Rhyne University and Catawba College to gain NCCSIA All-State selections.

The goalkeeper voting was dominated by Pfeiffer University’s senior goalie Suzie Hinman.  Hinman started and played every minute of all conference matches this season.  The Idaho Falls, Idaho native helped record three team shutouts including back-to-back clean sheets at Coker and Limestone.  She was also named to All-Conference Second Team.

The midfield position was led by Meredith College’s junior Alex Calvert.  Calvert is the only returning member to the NCCSIA team, earning her third spot in the midfield position.  She was named the 2009 USA South Women's Soccer Player of the Year, 2009 USA South first team and helped lead Meredith to their first regular season USA South Championship.  The Wilson, N.C. native was also second in the USA South in goals and points.

Rounding out the midfielder honors are Elizabeth Hawes of Lenoir-Rhyne University, Alyssa Wombwell of Pfeiffer University and Maria Borland of Catawba College.

Hawes, the freshman from Valdese, N.C. was a 2009 Daktronics NCAA Division II First-Team All-American.  She was also the first player in league history to win the South Atlantic Conference Player and Freshman of the Year during the 2009 season.  She led the league in total goals (17) and points scored (41).

Wombwell, the sophomore from Grand Blanc, Mich., was named a first team All-Conference (Carolinas) and Second Team Daktronics All-Southeast Region.  She averaged 2.2 points per conference match in nine games this season.

Borland, the freshman from Hagerstown, Md., was the leading scorer for Catawba in points and goals.  She was named first team Daktronics All-Southeast Region and First Team All-South Atlantic Conference.

Three forwards dominated the top three spots on the team.  Kristy Knight of Meredith College led the way, followed by Connie Axiotis of Belmont Abbey College and Kristen Wright of Queens University of Charlotte.

Knight, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., was First Team USA South and was named USA South Player of the Week three times in 2009.  She led the USA South in goals (22) and points (54) in helping Meredith gain a regular season USA South Athletic Conference Championship.

Axiotis, a sophomore from Arlington, Va., was 2009 Conference Carolinas Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection.  Eleven of her 14 goals came in conference play, including four in a win over Barton College.  She was the league leader in goals, goals per game and points in conference matches.

Wright, a freshman from Salisbury, Md., led Queens in points, goals, shots and game winners.  She was named the September InterCon Female Athlete of the Month and named to the Conference Carolinas All-Conference First Team and Freshman of the Year.

Three defenders topped the voting in their position; Alexa Baird of Catawba College, Catherine Hauck of Catawba College and Megan Mastalerz of Wingate University.

Baird, the junior from Plainfield, N.J., was named First Team Daktronics All-Southeast Region and First Team All-South Atlantic Conference.  She was the top defender on the team that posted nine shutouts and had a 0.86 goals against average.

Hauck, a sophomore from Lake Mary, Fla., is a two-time All-South Atlantic Conference First Team honoree (2008, 2009).  She is also a 2009 First Team NCAA Division II All-Southeast pick.  Hauck finished with eight goals and 16 points as a defender, including two game winners.

Mastalerz, a sophomore from Elkridge, Md., was named First Team All-South Atlantic Conference and Second Team Daktronics All-Southeast Region.  She helped to anchor a Wingate defense that led the league by allowing only 0.70 goals per game.
