CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Eleven student-athletes from five schools form the 2008 North
Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division
All-State Women’s Soccer Team.
Charlotte
heads the All-State Team with four student-athletes, while Wake Forest
and UNC Greensboro both have two selections. Charlotte
junior Hailey Beam (pictured left), a midfielder from Cornelius,
N.C. and sophomore Whitney Weinraub, a forward
from Holland, PA, both picked up the most votes at their respective
positions. UNC Wilmington’s defender Kelly Renkin picked up the most votes by a
defender while UNC Greensboro’s Kelsey Kearney was selected as the All-State
goalkeeper. Renkin is a two-time All-State selection. While Wake Forest’s
Kaley Fountain and Jill Hutchinson and Davidson’s Kyri Bye-Nagel were repeat
All-State selections after making the 2007 All-State team.
The team consists of
student-athletes from NCAA Division I colleges and universities throughout the
state. North Carolina
sports information professionals submitted nominees and NCCSIA members selected
the teams. The all-state unit consists of one goalkeeper, three defenders, four
midfielders and three forwards.
Founded in 2002, NCCSIA is comprised of sports information
professionals from North Carolina’s
NCAA Division I, II, III,
NAIA and independent institutions for the purpose of promoting college
athletics in the state. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina whose
responsibilities include sports information.
NCCSIA selects all-state teams in
the university (NCAA Division I) and college (Division II,
III, NAIA) divisions for women’s
volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball,
men’s and women’s soccer, softball
and baseball. Over 650 student-athletes have been recognized on all-state teams
since 2003UNC Greensboro’s Kearney dominated the All-State voting for
goalkeeper. The Durham, North Carolina native was a first-team
All-Southern Conference selection as well as a member of Southern Conference
All-Freshman team. She finished the season with 0.48 goals against average and
11 shutouts.
The defenders are led by three-time
All-State selection UNC Wilmington’s Kelly Renkin and two-time All-State
selection Wake Forest’s Kaley Fountain. Rounding out
the All-State defenders is Charlotte
sophomore Whitney Bryant.
Renkin was named first-team All-CAA
for the third season after leading the Seahawks in scoring with 15 points on
six goals and three assists. The Midlothian, Virginia native led a Seahawks defense which
recorded a school-record nine shutouts.
Fountain, who is a member of the
U.S. U-20 National team, earned second-team All-ACC honors. The Austin, Texas native
played a major role in helping Wake
Forest record nine
shutouts on the season.
Bryant earned first-team
All-Atlantic 10 after playing an integral role in a 49ers defense which
recorded 13 shutouts and limited 16 foes to a goal or less. The Marietta, Georgia
native scored a goal and recorded six assists this season.
The midfielders are led by
All-American Charlotte’s Hailey Beam joining her in the midfielder are Charlotte’s Sam Huecker, UNC Greensboro’s Katelynn Donovan
and Wake Forest’s Amy Smerdzinski.
Beam, who was A-10 Midfielder of
the Year, was a third-team NSCAA All-American. The Cornelius, North Carolina native was named A-10
Tournament MVP after leading the 49ers to their second straight A-10 Tournament
title. She ranked among the nations leaders with 17 goals, 13 assists and 47
points.
Huecker earned second-team
All-Atlantic 10 honors after finishing the season with six goals and 12
assists. The Crestwood, Kentucky
native recorded five assists against Xavier which was the highest single-game
assist total in Division I women’s soccer this season.
Donovan was Southern Conference
Player of the Year after scoring 12 goals with four assists for UNC Greensboro.
The Melville, New York
native helped UNC Greensboro capture the Southern Conference regular-season
title.
Smerdzinski was a second-team
All-ACC selection after scoring six goals with two assists. The Chantilly, Virginia native started all 21 games for Wake Forest.
Rounding out the NCCSIA All-State
University Division Women’s Soccer team are three forwards led by two-time
All-State selections Wake Forest’s Jill Hutchinson and Davidson’s Kyri
Bye-Nagel and the position’s top vote getter Charlotte’s Whitney Weinraub.
Hutchinson led Wake Forest
in goals with 10, assists with seven and points with 27. The Wayne,
Pennsylvania native scored six game-winning
goals including the one in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Morehead State.
Bye-Nagle led Davidson in scoring
with nine goals and 20 points. The Hanau, Germany
native earned first-team All-Southern Conference honors for the second straight
season.
Weinraub was
named A-10 Offensive Player of the Year after scoring 12 goals with 10 assists
for the 49ers. The Holland,
Pennsylvania native earned
second-team NSCAA All-Southeast region honors as well as being named first-team
All-Atlantic 10 and to the A-10 All-Tournament team.
