Wednesday, December 17, 2008

15justingarton.jpgGreensboro, N.C. – Eleven student-athletes representing six institutions were selected to the sixth annual North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) College Division All-State soccer team. Justin Garton (pictured left) of St. Andrews Presbyterian College is the lone previous NCCSIA All State honoree of the group.

The team consists of student-athletes from NCAA Division II and Division III colleges and universities throughout the state. North Carolina sports information professionals submitted nominees and NCCSIA members selected the teams.

The All-State unit consists of one goalkeeper, three defenders, four midfielders, and three forwards. All student-athletes involved with ties in the voting process were included on the All-State team.

The team is highlighted by three unanimous selections at the midfield position. UNC Pembroke led the voting with four NCCSIA All-State selections. Greensboro College and Wingate University both placed two student athletes on the team.

Andrew Clark of Greensboro College, UNC Pembroke’s Miguel Ferrer, and Luke Mulholland of Wingate were the unanimous midfield selections.  A junior from Ottawa, Ont., Canada, Clark led Greensboro with 25 points (11 goals, three assists). He was a USA South first-team selection and earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic District III first-team. Ferrer, a senior, recorded six goals and 10 assists for the NCAA DII Braves. A native of Miami, Fla., Ferrer was a 2007 Daktronics All-American, an All-Region pick the past two years, and a first-team All-Peach Belt Conference pick this season. Mulholland, a sophomore from Preston, England, was named to the NSCAA All-Appalachian Region and SAC teams the past two seasons. He recorded 23 points (eight goals, seven assists) for Wingate.

Pfeiffer sophomore Nick Brindley rounded out the midfield unit.  A sophomore team captain, Brindley ranked second for Pfeiffer in points.  The native of North Hamptonshire, England tallied eight goals and two assists and was a first-team All-Conference selection.

Senior forward Justin Garton of St. Andrews Presbyterian College, a 2007 All-State selection, is the lone previous NCCSIA honoree of the group. He recorded 25 points (12 goals and one assist) for the Knights and was a 2007 & 2008 Conference Carolinas second-team All-Conference performer.

Junior Nyemb from Wingate University, who tallied 33 points—the most of any 2008 NCCSIA honoree—also made the team at forward. A Douala, Cameroon native, the junior scored 16 goals and was a two-time Daktronics All-Region pick.  He was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III men’s soccer second team for the second consecutive season in 2008.

Freshman Carlos Cipriano from UNC Pembroke finished second on his team with 21 points on five assists and a team-leading eight goals.  The Raleigh, NC native scored three game-winning goals for the Braves.

UNC Pembroke’s Horatio Bynes is the NCCSIA All State goalkeeper. He helped the Braves to a 9-9-1 record while recording a 1.25 goals against average and 48 saves. Bynes was a 2008 second-team All-Peach Belt Conference selection.

Michael Davis, a freshman for UNC Pembroke, was picked to the NCCSIA team. The Charlotte, NC native had three goals and two assists as a defender. He was a 2008 Daktronics All-Region selection and started all 19 games for the Braves.

Senior Drew Griffith scored one goal and dished five assists for Greensboro College.  The Salisbury, NC native
anchored a GC back line that allowed 1.6 goals per game.  He was selected to the USA South All-Conference second team.

Earning the final spot on defense was Chad Pinnick, a senior from Queens University of Charlotte. He recorded 16 points  (seven goals, two assists) for a Royals Club that posted a 9-7-1 record.  Pinnick was a first-team All-Conference and ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District second-team selection.
